2022 Honda Civic Type R Render– Honda recently introduced the sedan version of the eleventh-generation Civic, ahead of its scheduled debut in the spring of next year. In the same announcement, the Japanese marque also confirmed that the hot Type R sedan will be making a comeback soon.
Despite this increase in size, Honda’s styling changes for the new Type R seem more evolutionary than revolutionary. Like the next standard sedan, Honda softened the lines of the car in an effort to broaden the car’s appeal globally, ditching many of the fake vents and giving the car a coating of the sharper and cleaner body.
The current Type R’s huge rear wing and deep front splitter will survive the redesign, however – and the hot sedan’s unusual three-barrel center-exit exhaust is expected to make a comeback, as the cutout on the rear bumper of this prototype.
Inside, the warm hatchback will mirror the design of the standard car with a new nine-inch dash-mounted infotainment system and a new digital instrument cluster in front of the driver. Buyers will also likely receive a new pair of sports seats, an updated sports steering wheel, and aluminum bottom bracket, as well as the Type R’s signature aluminum gearshift knob.
However, the most interesting feature of the new car will be its powertrain because, while the rest of the Honda lineup is on its way to electrification, the upcoming Type R will not. The brand recently clarified its EV strategy by announcing its objective to electrify only its European “consumer” range by 2022.

While we would expect the Civic 2022 to be similar in price to the outgoing 2021 model, Honda has not released a full list of standard and optional features, so it’s hard to pick which one represents the best value. . In the past, we were fans of the affordable Sport model, but depending on the car’s available features that could change. Honda hasn’t released any powertrain information for the 2022 Civic, but we’re betting that the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder available as an option on the current car will carry over to the new model. A less powerful 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder is currently standard and could also make the jump until 2022. Honda says the new Civic will remain only a front-wheel-drive car. A more streamlined interior design debuts in the 2022 Civic, with cleaner lines and an instrument panel featuring a full-width honeycomb-patterned mesh design element that cleverly hides the air vents. A wider center console feels less cluttered than that of the outgoing model and has what looks like a large, deep bin in front of the gearshift lever for storing smartphones, keys, and road snacks. Honda says passenger space is roughly the same as the 2021 model, and so is the sedan’s cargo space; a hatchback body will also be offered, but we don’t have any information on this model yet.

The 2022 Civic prototype shown in photos here features a 9.0-inch touchscreen running the most up-to-date version of Honda’s infotainment system. We’re not sure if this screen will be offered as standard equipment or if a smaller screen – perhaps a 7.0-inch unit – will be the base offering. Regardless, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are likely to be standard and may offer wireless connectivity as well. Expected options include in-dash navigation, built-in Wi-Fi, and a wireless smartphone charger.

The 2022 Honda Civic Type R should look more reserved than its overrated predecessor, but that shouldn’t stop it from being more exciting to drive. While waiting for official details on Honda’s next-generation top-performing hatchback, we expect its updated turbocharged four-cylinder engine to raise the stakes in the power department. We’re also happy to hear that the upcoming Type R will retain its manual transmission. Drivers who can’t do the three-pedal mix could also be bailed out by a new dual-clutch automatic transmission. Even though the 2022 Civic Type R will look more subdued than the outgoing model, we still expect it to have a distinct frontage with a prominent rear spoiler, aerodynamic additions, and track-ready hardware.

We can only speculate on its production specs, but we’re confident they’ll include a more powerful version of the current turbo four. We also spotted a camouflaged test model, which didn’t do much to hide its distinct rear spoiler and aggressive wheel and tire assembly.

The new Civic Type R will continue to be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, but it will be more powerful than the current generation which develops 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Honda has confirmed that the more powerful Civic will always have a standard manual transmission, and we believe it could also add a dual-clutch automatic transmission to match the Hyundai Veloster N. of whoever underpins the outgoing model. We believe this rules out the adoption of a control arm front suspension, as seen on the new Acura TLX. Instead, the front-wheel drive Honda will likely continue to use its innovative dual-axle strut front suspension which does a terrific job of removing torque from steering.

While the new Civic Type R has a more minimalist interior design than its predecessor – which should give it, like the exterior, a more mature feel – we’re still expecting plenty of racy visual cues. They should include red accents, faux carbon-fiber trim, and hopefully a familiar set of very comfortable and supportive front seats. We’re also told that it will have a new cluster of digital gauges, and based on a render prototype, we see a set of physical air conditioning controls located.

Honda gave us a preview of the 11th Gen Civic sedan as a prototype, confirming that it will be available in sedan, sedan, Si, and Type R models. We’re most excited about the latter, not just because The current-generation Type R is one of our favorite hot hatches, but because, as the 2020 prototype sedan predicted, the new model will look more mature than the current model. more odious youthful looks. This new look – much like the kid who returns from summer vacation after going beyond suspenders, greasy hair and buttons – will mature, borrowing design cues from the Accord. And, since it will wear the coveted red “R” badge, it will have added 20-inch wheels, thin crepe sidewalls, an obnoxious but functional rear spoiler, rear diffuser and multiple pipes to the rear. We’re hoping for fewer fake air vents though, which is likely. One thing is for sure: it will be a welcome improvement over the previous model and we might want to be seen behind the wheel.
The current-generation car is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque transmitted to the front wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission. And that’s the only option. We expect Honda will continue to use the turbo four, but make a few tweaks to increase horsepower, and hopefully it will have a better soundtrack. There have been rumors of an all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain, but we think that’s unlikely, at least at launch. Honda has confirmed that the Type R, along with the Si, will retain three pedals, and the automaker also hasn’t ruled out a quick-change dual-clutch automatic transmission, something the Veloster N now has.
It will use an evolution of the current car’s chassis, which means we probably won’t see a control arm front suspension like the new TLX, but rather an improvement to the dual-axis strut front suspension. The dimensions of the new car won’t change much either. Honda lengthened the 11th generation car’s wheelbase just over an inch, and its height and width are unchanged. The prototype was shown sitting on a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports, probably the Si’s new standard tire, while the Type R is expected to get better performance rubber.
Also a preview on the prototype, the interior will be more upscale compared to the current car, which is adorned with faux carbon fiber, red trim and other hard plastics. It will have a digital gauge cluster with a central 9.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. But while the dashboard might look more stylish, we still expect the faux carbon-fiber trim to remain in the Type R. Honda has added a classic teardrop-shaped aluminum shifter to the current car. for 2020, so expect that to stay.

The Civic 2022 will launch in spring 2021. The sedan model is expected to arrive first, with the hatchback, Si and Type R variants to follow. We had guessed that the sedan and the standard Civic sedan were the most likely candidates for all-wheel drive. The current Type R is known to be one of the best performing front-wheel-drive cars on the market, so a switch to all-wheel drive would be a surprising decision for this variant.
Other competitors such as the Mazda 3 have also added all-wheel drive systems recently; The Subaru Impreza has long offered all-wheel drive as standard in this segment.
