48-volt lightweight hybrid technology for six-cylinder engine models.
A new lightweight hybrid system with a 48V starter-Generator offers improved performance, better efficiency, and improved driving comfort across six cylinders of BMW 5 Series.
A strong 48V starter-Generator and a second battery greatly enhance the ways in which Brake Energy regeneration can be utilized. When the driver releases the accelerator, the Generator converts the kinetic energy into electricity to be stored in a 48V battery. The benefits of healing the energy are much more when the control switch driving experience is set to Sport mode. Additional retarding produced over and above the engine braking effect is also utilized when the brakes are applied. A specially designed braking system previously found in the BMW plug-in-hybrid model allows a combination of electrical and mechanical retarding that will be deployed as required and with maximum efficiency at all times.
Accumulated energy is re-accumulated in 48V batteries supplied to 12V electrical system and power lamp, steering, power window, ventilation, audio system, and seat heater. In addition, the stored energy can be used to provide additional drive power when fed back to the starter-Generator 48V.
Starter-Generators then act like electric drive units that assist the engine, allowing it to operate in a more efficient range as often as possible and ensure there are fewer peaks in fuel consumption. When the car is accelerated, the 48V starter-Generator is capable of offering a power boost effect driver that can instantly put an extra 11 HP on tap for more dynamic power delivery. The result is a sharper response from the line and a faster burst of speed when speeding up.
A special feature of a lightweight hybrid system is the ability to charge 48V batteries from generators while driving at a constant speed. This method generates electricity by raising the load point of the machine to be used only when the battery power is low and during the phase when it has no adverse effect on the efficiency of the machine.
The 48V starter-Generator has the added benefit of allowing the machine to be turned off and start again very quickly with less vibration. The result is a convenience improvement when the start automatically stops and the sliding function is being used. When the driver brakes stop, the machine can be turned off as soon as the car speed drops below 9 mph. And if the glide function is activated, the machine is also completely lethal than just separated from the drivetrain. This function now operates at speeds between 16 – 99 mph and, on the new BMW 5 Series, is available not only in ECO Pro mode but also COMFORT mode.
New stronger plug-in-Hybrid drivetrain
2021 BMW 530e and 530e xDrive Sedans receive improved performance from the latest generation of eDrive technology. A 181 HP 2.0-liter gasoline engine is equipped with a 107 HP electric drive unit, integrated into the 8-speed transmission of the Steptronic. When the Driving Control and transmission buttons are set to SPORT, the new XtraBoost feature offers 40 HP an additional up to 10 seconds when the throttle is pressed to the kick-down position. Combined strength and torque of the new 530e and 530e xDrive sedan are 288 HP and 310 ft-lbs of torque, an increase of 40 HP over previous 530e models.
A high voltage 34 AH/12 kWh gross (9.09 kWh net) Lithium-ion battery module provides storage capacity for only electrical and performance-oriented driving.
Sedan 530e also features acoustic protection for pedestrians, which uses an exterior speaker system to produce a sound that is undoubtedly made specifically for power BMWs that operate in a power-only mode at speeds up to 19 mph.
With the addition of XtraBoost functions, 530e and 530e xDrive sedan can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and reach the highest speed of 130 mph when equipped with all-season tires and 146 mph (143 mph to 530e xDrive) when equipped with performance tires.

The latest version of BMW’s fast-shifting Sport automatic transmission features a new, optimized hydraulic control system for improved responsiveness and efficiency. A new generation of torque reducer that reduces rotation deviations in the powertrain helps improve driving comfort and shifting smoothness. Twin-Damper system integral to isolate vibrations reduces the slip rate on the torque converter locking clutch.
Intelligent connectivity allows the 8-speed automatic transmission to adapt shifting strategies according to the route and driving situation. Working with the standard navigation system, 8-speed Steptronic uses transmission data from this system and from an optional active Cruise Control radar sensor system. This allows the transmission to avoid unnecessary tooth changes when negotiating a series of quick angles and, when approaching the vehicle in front for example, to shift downward early in order to use the engine’s braking to rub speed.
Rear-wheel drive or BMW Intelligent xDrive
BMW Rear-wheel drive performance feel or ability throughout the latest BMW season smart All-wheel-drive system? The choice is yours with the new four-Series and six-cylinder models. The available power and torque of the M550i xDrive sedan dictate that it comes standard with the BMW xDrive system.
The full power variable transfer from xDrive BMW intelligently guarantees maximum traction and directional stability in all road and weather conditions while also promoting sportier handling. The biased rear-setup system helps to ensure the new 5 Series sedan maintains the exhilarating driver’s driving experience expecting from BMW.
